Tips to choose Artwork

Welcome back! In the past month, we have been working to further expand our impressive art collection—specifically, with some stunning new pieces by Gourishankar Soni, and planning some fantastic exhibits for the fall.

Additionally, we have been working with many clients on their art projects and often receive questions on how to choose the perfect piece of art for their home. At Neev, we offer personalized art advisory services to help you select the right piece of art for your home.

In the meantime, reflecting the art world’s growing appreciation for Indian cultural and artistic expression, global demand for South Asian art has been on the rise.

Below are five essential tips to know when choosing art that elevates your home. (And if you want more expert tips and assistance, contact us today!)

(1) Feel of the Room

Consider your personal style and choose artwork that complements your home’s decor and furniture, reflects your personal style and preferences, and evokes the desired emotions or memories. What mood do you want to create?

(2) Color Palette

Identify the room’s main colors and choose art with a harmonizing palette. For a cohesive look, choose art in varying shades of a single color. For a bold effect, select art with colors opposite to the room’s palette. If you are working with a neutrally toned room, choose art with pops of color to create interest.

(3) Scale of Positioning

Ensure the art is at eye level, proportional to the wall and furniture around it, and serves as a focal point (i.e. above a sofa or bed). Leave space around the art to avoid a cluttered appearance. Consider creating a gallery wall with multiple smaller pieces for a dynamic look.

(4) Budget

Look for art within your predetermined price range and compare prices, focusing on quality over the number of pieces. Explore affordable art of emerging artists. However, consider good art an investment: sometimes paying a bit more for a piece that truly speaks to you can be worthwhile.

(5) Personal Connection

Choose art that tells a meaningful story, resonates with you emotionally, and reflects your cultural background or interests. Think about how the piece will fit into your life and home over time.

Global Demand for South Asian Art On the Rise

The Neo Art Editorial (link here) writes, “Modern art in South Asia began to gain traction in the early 20th century, as artists started moving away from colonial influences to establish their own identities”. Indeed, according to ArtNet, the global market for South Asian art experienced an approximate annual growth of 15% between 2018 and 2020. ArtTactic adds, in the past five years, the number of galleries highlighting South Asian art has risen by 30%. A notable contributing factor to this global growth is the expanding art collector base that now includes international buyers, in addition to the South Asian collectors that view such art as a celebration and conservation of their heritage.

Business Standard (link here) cites an increase in sale value for 92% of featured South Asian artists, demand “fueled by India’s economic strength and a rise in disposable income”. Moreover, the top 50 artworks saw a 3x increase in cumulative value as of 2023, indicating burgeoning international recognition and demand.

At Neev, we are committed to providing a platform for emerging and renowned Indian artists alike to reach a global audience and foster greater cultural exchange and deeper human connection. We have curated a wide range of media and styles showcasing the beauty and diversity of art, from traditional paintings to abstract and contemporary installations. Furthermore, we offer a broad range of services to clientele, including art advisory, commissioned art, and collection management.

New Works (Gourishankar Soni)

Born in 1980 in Shrimadhopur (Sikar), Rajasthan, Gourishankar Soni received his diploma in Drawing and Painting from the Rajasthan School of Art, Jaipur, in 2000, and later completed his M.F.A. in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Rajasthan University, in 2003.

Gourishankar transforms the unique doors and windows characteristic to Rajasthani architecture into square, rectangular, and circular openings in his artworks—openings that connect and communicate with the world outside, much like the windows from his favorite buildings. His multifaceted paintings feature monochromatic backgrounds textured with a variety of symbols, characters, and signs influenced by different cultural elements. His subjects—human figures in various postures and everyday objects such as chairs, bells, musical instruments, etc.—are depicted peeping out of the windows in contrasting tones.

Highlighted in this month’s issue are two beautiful new pieces of his (shown below are new addition to our fall curation): “Game of Heart | Acrylic on Canvas, 2024” (45” x 45”) and “Game of Diamond | Acrylic on Canvas, 2024” (36”x 48”) respectively. If you’re looking for an eye-catching addition to your space, consider Gourishankar’s iconic three-dimensional creations.
