New Artist Highlight (Dinkar Jadhav)

Dinkar Jadhav, a renowned artist from Pune, has been a professional artist since 1994, emerging as a distinct figure in Indian contemporary art. His vibrant, prismatic works draw inspiration from nature, focusing on the dynamic forms of horses and bulls. Jadhav first gained acclaim with his "Ashwa Chitramala" series, where horses symbolize the human quest for love and freedom.

Over time, Jadhav's style has evolved from the intense passion and anguish of his earlier works to a more self-assured, romantic expression. This transition is evident in his "Lust for Love" series, where horses are depicted in pairs, embodying a carefree and adventurous spirit. The introduction of the bull into his portfolio adds a new dimension, representing strength and virility, charging toward dreams and desires.

His art is characterized by bold colors and geometric forms, creating a unique crayon-like texture with acrylics.

Highlighted in this month’s issue are two captivating new paintings and one sculpture from the artist. If you’re looking for a colorful addition to your space, why not consider one of these?

Selected Works (Swati Pasari)

Swati Pasari is a vibrant, self-taught contemporary Indian artist who found her true calling in art after initially pursuing a career in business. She completed her bachelor’s degree in business with the intention of joining her father's business. However, her experiences with Pranic healing and meditation led her to discover her passion for art. In 2008, she embarked on her journey as a professional artist. The sold-out success of her first solo exhibition affirmed that she had chosen the right path.

Swati’s artwork encompasses both original acrylic paintings and fiberglass sculptures, unified by recurring themes of Radha Krishna, Ganesh, Buddha and semi-abstract motifs. Her creative process is deeply spiritual, informed by her background as a Pranic healer. As she describes, "I enter a different dimension when I paint, so much so that I do not know what the painting will be till it’s done." This intuitive approach allows her to see a complete reflection of her thoughts in her finished works, providing a sense of fulfillment and completion.

Selected Works (Gond Art)

The Gond people, one of India's largest and most ancient tribes, have a 1400-year history. They primarily reside in Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, but their art is widely cherished by culture enthusiasts around the world. Gond art is deeply rooted in the belief that good images bring good luck. To ward off evil and invite good fortune, Gonds adorn their homes with traditional tattoos and motifs. Their paintings showcase their interconnectedness with nature, illustrating their beliefs, rituals, village life, and man's relationship with the natural world. In keeping with tradition, these artworks make generous use of vibrant hues, imaginative lines, and dots and often involve the application of materials found in nature, such as soil, plants, and charcoal. Today, Gond artists also incorporate modern materials such as canvas and acrylic and oil paints.

Understanding Art Pricing: A Global Perspective with a Focus on India

For any curious art lovers looking for the perfect piece for their home, we’re sure the question of art pricing has come up a time or two. How is it determined? What factors drive it?

Art, a reflection of creativity and passion, has a unique value that transcends mere monetary worth. When it comes to pricing, the art market operates on various standards, one of which is the pricing per square foot. In India, this method has become increasingly standardized, aligning with global market practices. Here’s a closer look at how art pricing per square foot works in India and how it compares to international standards.

Art Pricing Per Square Foot: The Basics

In the art world, the pricing of artwork is often determined by several factors including the artist’s reputation, the medium used, and the complexity of the work. One common method of pricing is based on the size of the artwork, measured per square foot. This approach offers a straightforward way to assess the value of a piece, especially for artworks that vary significantly in dimensions.

In India, many artists and galleries have adopted this per square foot pricing model. This standardization helps simplify the valuation process and provides a clear framework for both buyers and sellers. The consistent pricing structure is not only beneficial for setting expectations but also ensures transparency in transactions.

Standardization Across India

Over the years, Indian artists have embraced this model, resulting in a standardized approach to pricing across the country. Whether you are purchasing a piece from a gallery in Mumbai or an artist’s studio in Delhi, you can expect a similar pricing structure. This uniformity helps maintain fairness in the art market and allows buyers to make informed decisions regardless of the geographical location.

Global Comparisons: Art Pricing Around the World

When comparing India’s art pricing model with the global market, it’s clear that standardization is a common practice. Internationally, many countries and art markets use similar methods to price art, often based on size, medium, and artist reputation. The concept of pricing per square foot or per square meter is prevalent in places like the United States, Europe, and Australia, making it easier for artists and collectors to navigate the global art scene.

Despite regional variations in pricing due to factors such as local demand and cost of living, the fundamental principles of art pricing remain consistent. High-profile artists and renowned galleries worldwide often use standardized pricing models to ensure that the value of art is assessed fairly and consistently.

The Value of Art: Beyond Pricing

While pricing models provide a framework for valuing art, it’s essential to remember that the true worth of an artwork extends beyond its price tag. The creativity, time, and effort invested by the artist play a significant role in defining its value. Whether in India or abroad, the intrinsic value of art is derived from the emotional and intellectual connections it fosters, as well as the impact it has on its audience.

Conclusion

Art pricing per square foot in India, along with its alignment with global market practices, reflects a well-established system designed to ensure fairness and transparency. This standardized approach allows for consistency in art valuation, making it easier for buyers and sellers to engage in transactions. As you explore the world of art, remember that while pricing provides a useful guide, the true essence of art lies in its ability to inspire, challenge, and evoke emotions.
