Artist Details

Umakant Kanade is an Indian contemporary artist known for his intricate black-and-white landscapes created with a crow quill and ink. Born in 1965 in Ahmednagar and based in Pune, he completed his G.D. Art in Painting with First Class from Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune. Kanade’s art reflects a deep sense of calm and connection with nature. His compositions feature stones, trees, and birds drawn with remarkable precision — each line expressing patience and quiet strength. Built through thousands of fine strokes, his works carry a feeling of stillness and balance. He often adds a pop of colour with a flower or a bird in flight, bringing a gentle brightness to his monochrome world. He works with a crow quill, a rare and traditional drawing instrument made from the feather of a crow, once used by calligraphers and draftsmen. Known for its fine, flexible nib, it allows him to create intricate lines that respond to the lightest change in pressure. With a career spanning more than three decades, he has exhibited widely across India and internationally, including at Jehangir Art Gallery, Lalit Kala Akademi, and the India Art Fair. His works are part of numerous private and institutional collections, reflecting his thoughtful engagement with nature, time, and the art of quiet observation.
